Purpose / Objectives

This research aims to combine PRSV-resistant with the delayed ripening trait in papaya hybrids. To address this objective the following research activities will be undertaken:

(a) field test under contained biosafety conditions the F1 hybrid plants with both delayed ripening trait (previously obtained by transgenesis) and PRSV resistance trait (obtained by crossing with an intergeneric cross between a papaya elite line and Vasconcel/ea quercifolia) and determine the horticultural traits of the hybrid papaya plants compared with control;

(b) survey of insect pests and their profile on control and hybrid papaya plants.

(c) molecular analysis;

(d) biochemical and nutritional studies; and

(e) physiological and postharvest behavior and sensory attributes studies of the fruits.

Biosafety measures

Conditions for Approval

• That all activities be conducted in the proposed designated fenced facility and adjacent area after it has been fenced, located at IPB, Laguna;

• The DOST-BC approved PIS shall be posted in a prominent place in the brgy hall of Los Banos, Laguna at least 15 days before the actual transplanting of the papaya in the confined field and shall submit to the DOST-BC proof of posting of the PIS within ten days from the last day of posting.

• The posted PIS should remain in place for three consecutive weeks from date of posting

• That only authorized personnel be allowed access to the fenced facility

• That the proponents adhere as closely as possible to the planting and monitoring schedule

• That modifications in the planting schedule and other activities could be made with the concurrence of the IBC and DOST-BC

• That papaya plants shall be cut down when the plants show severe yellowing, leaf deformation and reduction in canopy size to limit the inoculums level

• That all plant materials that have been cut down must be buried and covered with soil at least six inches thick

• That material management be followed at all times, accounting for the number of fruits and seeds; and

• That the additional requirements that the DOST-BC may impose, as necessary, during the experiment period be complied with
